New
Connecticut Mountain Lion Sightings Come After One
Is Struck By Car
The
Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection
received two reports of mountain lion sightings in
Greenwich on Sunday, a day after a mountain lion was
struck and killed by a car in Milford.
The
Department of Environmental Protection issued a
statement saying they take the reports seriously and
will work with the Greenwich Police Department to
monitor the situation. However, they said, the
sightings did not provide any new evidence of a
mountain lion in Greenwich, and absent such evidence
they continue to believe the mountain lion struck
and killed in Milford the day before was the one
that had generated a rash of reported sightings
earlier this month.
Greenwich police
received several reports of mountain lion sightings
in early June. Then, on Saturday, June 11, a
140-pound mountain lion was struck and killed on the
Wilbur Cross Parkway. Wildlife experts believe the
animal was a victim of the exotic pet trade and not
native to the state. Connecticut has not had
confirmed native mountain lions roaming the state in
more than 100 years.
