Whitewater Park Approved For New York's Sacandaga
River
It took seven years, but the
group hoping to create a kayaker’s playground on the
Sacandaga River in Hadley, New York, has all of its permits,
according to an article on
PostStar.com. Still, the future of the proposal
hangs on funding.
Since 2004,
the Sacandaga-Hudson River Advisory Council has been seeking
to install underwater barriers that would create artificial
waves, the likes of which are rarely seen in natural
settings and are sought-after by paddlers. The Adirondack
Park Agency issued its approval of the project last week,
following approvals from several state and federal
regulatory bodies, according to LA Group senior planner
Tracey Clothier, who has been handling the permitting and
grant applications for the project.
But a lack of
funding for the $1 million project has been an issue from
the very beginning. "Everyone thinks it’s a great project,
but no one ever writes the check," said project lead
organizer John Duncan, owner of Sacandaga Outdoor Center.
Duncan first began planning the project in 1998; a 2004 APA
approval expired before funding could be found. Organizers
are submitting funding proposals to the state’s recently
created regional economic development council and other
economic development arms of government. The councils have
some $200 million in state aid at their disposal to fund
job-creating projects in 2012 across New York’s 10 regions.
Whitewater park organizers contend that the paddler’s
playground would result in an influx of whitewater
enthusiasts into the community.
